Death toll climbs above 21,700 in Turkey-Syria earthquake

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 10, ARTSAKHPRESS. The total death toll from the earthquakes that struck southwest Turkey and northern Syria on Monday has reached 21,719, a tally that is expected to rise as rescue crews continue searching for survivors in the rubble of thousands of toppled buildings. 

In Turkey, the latest update by the country’s disaster agency said that at least 18,342 people were killed and 74,242 others injured.

In Syria, the death toll reached at least 3,377 – of which 2,030 died in regions outside of the Assad government’s control. 5,245 people were injured across the country, according to the latest information.

Armenia sent SAR teams to the quake-hit Turkey and Syria to assist in the search-and-rescue efforts.
